“Sir, you told me to let you know when Ms. Sapphire was ready to go.”

I nod. “Thank you, Weaver,” I say, making my way to the car. I’m three cars back from the sedan she is traveling in. The private airstrip isn’t that far from us. My heart aches as I climb into the sedan. I fist my hands in the seat and wait for the driver to climb behind the wheel. It would take nothing for me to jump out and rush to her car to pull her into my arms. I could hear her call me August again at least one more time. Maybe forever.

“You got room for one more?” Ivory asks, but doesn’t wait for permission. She slides into the back seat with me.

“I can’t wait for vacation. Where are we going this year?” she asks with excitement, but I don’t look her way or respond. My heart is in my throat; I don’t think I could speak if I even wanted to.

I watch them help her out of the sedan. She turns her head this way and that because her vision obscured. It’s a punch to the chest and throat.

“You are making the right decision to let her go, Mason,” Ivory says and tries to lace her fingers with mine, but I pull away from her. My eyes never leave Emmanuella as she walks up the steps of the plane. My eyes sting with tears. I squeeze them shut and take in a few breaths. I try to telepathically tell her that I love her. I wish I was strong enough to make her mine. But she deserves so much more than me.

Maybe I could have kept her on as an employee. Sure, we couldn’t be together, but at least she wouldn’t have had to return home to a place that she never belonged. She confided that to me and I’m sending her back to them. She must hate me.

I faked her out and gave her hope, too. Many nights we spoke of a future together. She probably feels so betrayed by me. Fuck.

I want nothing more than to bring her back. We belong together. I will never know tenderness like she showed me. She was the perfect blend of sweet and sexy that I will never find in my life again.

As the plane taxies down the runway, I panic and reach for the door. The things that she told me about her family and how they made her feel about her sexuality…she doesn’t deserve that. She is a goddess. My goddess. I have to stop her.

I reach for the door handle.

“Mason, please, let her go. If you really thought she should stay she’d be here with you right now. There must be some reason she’s on that plane.”

I don’t tell her that all of those reasons have nothing to do with Emmanuella and everything to do with me. There is no way that I can be the man and the monster, and I let her go because I am afraid of who I will become if I let the man take over.
